Words and Music

"Words are instruments of music: an ignorant man uses them for jargon; but when a master touches them they have unexpected life and soul. Some words sound out like drums; some breathe memories sweet as flutes; some call like a clarionet; some show a charge like trumpets; some are sweet as children's talk; others rich as a mother's answering back." --Anonymous

I found this quote in an anthology collection copyrighted before I was born. So old in fact, the date is written in Roman numerals: MCMXLVII. Does anyone read Roman numerals anymore?

Anyway, the quote was anonymous back then--still so today since I couldn't find any attribution, even after googling the phrases. But the word picture is as timely now as it was then.

Does the metaphor 'ring' true for you?

Hope your words are making great music!  Enjoy the last days of October...

October Gathering of Moments and Memories

Destin October 2015
"Surely there is something in the unruffled calm of nature that overawes our little
anxieties and doubts; the sight of the deep blue sky, and the clustering stars above,
seem to impart a quiet to the mind."--Jonathan Edwards

We had opportunity this time last week to gather--mom, dad, kids, kids-in-law, five grandkids--at the beach, drinking in of the unruffled calm of nature, quieting the busyness for a few days, playing and savoring. Our emotional tanks were filled, helping to prepare us for the days ahead.

A few favorite snapshots:

Hope you're finding space for unruffled calm as well! Happy rest of the weekend...

When Imagination Is Out of Focus

"You cannot depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus." --Mark Twain

Left side of the brain is so often dominant over this way: details, to-do lists, things to keep track of. But I try to be intentional about keeping the right side of the brain awake and engaged so that writing is not neglected.

Some of my favorite activities?
  • photography
  • haiku
  • writing prompts
  • walks
  • playing with the children
  • reading
  • journaling

Is your imagination strong at the moment or a tad out of focus? What do you do to refocus it?
