Restart the Engine: Revving up the R's

"Let a joy keep you. Reach out your hands and take it when it runs by." --Carl Sandburg

Confession time: I've not been reading much. I've not been writing much.

A marathoner runs. A musician makes music. An artist creates. A writer reads. A writer writes.

For sure, there are times of allowances. Times of necessity. The unexpected. Loved ones in hospitals, nurturing times, reaching out times. Being available. Assisting. Caring. A writer after all is a real person and family member first. This past week was such a time over this way, and I'm glad I could be where I was to help.

But now...what? Well, it's time. Time to reevaluate. Time to reassess. Time to ramp up the reading, and reset the writing goals. Reach out the hands and recover the time when it runs by. Time to revisit the joy.

Summer may be all about recreation, reunions, relaxing, recharging. It's also a time (can you hear the engine starting up??) to:

Regroup.
Re-up.
Re-commit.
Restart.
Rebound.
Re-invest.
Re-ignite.
Re-create.

That's what I'll be doing this week, revving up the r's...

What about you--how's the summer writing going for you? Or not...

  1. Thankfully I have been reading a lot and I think that's why I am revved up with writing. When you get into a good book, you cant help but want to do it yourself:) enjoy your summer!

  2. I've been taking the ramp up the reading to heart. I'm trying to get through my TBR pile, which of course is next to impossible but I'm trying. :D

  3. It's hard to balance it all sometimes, isn't it? I hope to get revved up again this summer and work on my WIP! I am stalled halfway through the second draft. Gotta get back into it!

  5. Terri--more evidence of why reading is important to a writer, how it helps rev up the writing in return. Thanks for sharing!

Stina--Not only is my TBR pile stacked high, but so is a growing list of titles that I want to check out of the library. Oh, if there were only more hours in the day :-) Good luck on your reading...

Lisa--good luck on getting back to your WIP, too. Hope the energy starts flowing for you again soon.

And Debbie, thank you! Appreciate the link, and your encouragement. Best of luck to you in your writing projects and submissions :-)

  6. I am actually doing the same thing - regrouping and whatnot. My mother in law had surgery last month; she's facing other issues too, so not sure what the schedule will be like for the rest of the summer. Thanks for the encouragement!

    Blessings,
    Karen

  7. Karen, hope your mother-in-law is recovering well. I empathize with you. Last week both my parents were in the hospital at the same time--Mom on one floor, Dad on another. Mom's back home, but not Dad, who will need extended therapy. We live in different cities, but are thankful things have stabilized for the time being...

  8. My life in a nutshell:

    Working - about 14 hours a day
Writing - another couple, wherever I can fit it in
Reading - at least a little every day
Wishing - I could forget about the work and just write and read! :-)
