Where Writing Begins

"I always tell my writing students
that every good piece of writing
begins with both a mystery
and a love story.

And that every single sentence
must be a poem.
And that economy
is the key to all good writing.

And that every character
has to have a secret."

A new week beckons in which I hope to uncover secrets. What about you?

  1. Wow, I've never heard that Silas House quote! It immediately made me think of how I approach manuscripts, and I love the bit about each character needing a secret. Thanks for the piece of inspiration!

  2. It's a busy week here for me as I pack up all my memories of this house and prepare for my cross-country trip. I hope to delve into my writing a little bit too!

  3. That's a wonderful quote. And isn't that the dilemma for all of us who love to write? How do we achieve that poetic quality while maintaining "economy" of words? That's one secret I'd dearly love to know!
